RECTOR'S WELCOME MESSAGE

Welcome to the web-site of Christ Church - Episcopal, Chattanooga, TN. Here you will find information introducing you to our congregation and linking you to the wider Episcopal Church

Ours is a diverse and inclusive urban congregation. All persons are welcome here. Our members come from all parts of Chattanooga and the surrounding area. They are attracted by our worship and by our diversity.

Like all Episcopal churches, our Sunday worship uses the Book of Common Prayer. We read scripture, sing hymns, pray, and celebrate Holy Eucharist (also called the Lord’s Supper, or Holy Communion. At Christ Church, our worship is enriched by the use of incense and chant. These ancient aids to worship draw us deeper into the wonder and the mystery of God. If you have never experienced worship in this way before, we encourage you to try it.

Each Sunday following our 10:30 a.m. service, there is a time of hospitality - a chance to share some simpler refreshments and to talk with those with whom you have worshipped. This time of fellowship deepens our sense of community.

Christian education/formation programs are offered on Sunday mornings for both children and adults. You will find information on these programs elsewhere on this web-site. Special educational, fellowship, and worship opportunities are offered throughout the year. Information on these is posted also.

Our buildings are located across the street from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.  During the school year, we offer food, fellowship and worship for students.  The group meets on Wednesday evenings in our campus ministry center.  Students from Chattanooga State Technical Community College are also invited.

Our congregation takes seriously our call to minister in the world.  Following the lead of the national Episcopal Church, we commit 0.7% of our income in support of the U. N. Millennium Development Goals, with the goal of eradicating extreme poverty.  Our members are involved in a variety of outreach ministries in Chattanooga and beyond.  We support Episcopal Metropolitan Ministries and the Chattanooga Community Kitchen.  We participate in the Grateful Gobbler Walk to benefit the Homeless Coalition and the Strides of March walk to benefit those with HIV/AIDS.  In conjunction with other Episcopal churches in the area, we provide books and school supplies for needy children in Chattanooga.  We are a “sister parish” to a number of small missions on the Cheyenne River Reservation in South Dakota.  Members of Christ Church have visited there and helped to paint a church; we have also provided seeds and tools for their community garden.  We are always open to God’s call to us to minister in new ways.

I hope you will explore our web-site and come to meet us in person. I, or any staff member, will be happy to talk with you and answer questions you may have about us and our programs. I look forward to hearing from you.
